De Atramentis — Document Black — Ink Review #272

Image
De Atramentis — Document Black   Ink Review # 272   Ink:  Black Series:  Document Brand:  De Atramentis Country:  Germany Type:  Pigment ink Availability:  International Short Cartridges, 45 ml bottles. Pens Used:  Osmiroid Copperplate EEF flex, Lamy Safari (EF, F, M, B, 1.1) Description I got a pack of international short cartridges of this ink to compare with the many black inks I’ve already reviewed. While the swatch cards show an intense black, with a dry pen like the Lamy Safari, it is more like a charcoal color. The ink is viscous and reminds me of Noodler’s Polar Black in behavior. Dry times are above average on Rhodia. Its saving grace is that it’s excellent on copy paper and it is waterproof. Lubrication depends on the nib size. It was excellent with the Osmiroid Copperplate EEF nib. However, with the Safari EF and F nibs, it was slightly scratchy. The pen needs a nice soaking in an ammonia-based cleaner if ink is forgotten in...

Octopus — Document Brown — Ink Review #268

Octopus — Document Brown   Ink Review # 268   Ink:  Document Brown Series:  Dokumenthus (Document) Brand:  Octopus Country:  Manual check needed Type:  Pigment (Document) Availability:  30 ml bottles.  Pens Used:  Pilot Kakuno EF,  Kaweco Sport (EF/F/M/B/ stub 1.1) Description After testing many Octopus Write and Draw inks, I thought I’d test one of their document inks. This series is comprised of 9 inks. The ink behaved flawlessly with all nibs. There was a bit of feedback only with Kaweco EF & F. The ink then spread with M and broader nibs, especially on copy paper. But it was quite well-behaved with F and finer nibs. I didn’t test it with a flex nib as I didn’t find it pertinent for this type of ink. The color is reddish-brown, kind of flat. I like my browns darker and greyer. The price is more expensive compared to the Write & Draw series, and Document inks by De Atramentis and Rohrer and Klingner.  Cleaning is a pa...

Platinum Carbon Black — Ink Review #254

Platinum Carbon Black   Ink Review # 254   --- 🧾  Description   Ink:   Carbon Black Brand:  Platinum Country:  Japan Pens Used:  Platinum Preppy EF, Lamy (EF/F/M/B/stub 1.1), Osmiroid Copperplate semi-flex nib.  Available:  Platinum Cartridges and 60 ml bottles.   This is a classic pigment black ink; I’ve been using it on and off for years in a vintage Platinum Pocket pen. It even made the prickly, needlepoint-like Osmiroid copperplate nib sing. I was surprised by the feedback from the Lamy Safari nibs on some papers. With a light touch, it went away.     This is the gold standard for copy paper: Show-through and bleed-through are as faint as can be.    For anyone who draws, this ink is a must. It dries fast and you can do washes over it almost immediately.    There is some silver sheen on Iroful, which I have noticed with many pigment inks.    I needed a cleaning solution fo...
