Monteverde Malibu Blue — Ink Review #142

Monteverde Malibu Blue   Ink Review #  142   Originally posted on FPN:  Aug 28, 2024   Ink:  Monteverde Malibu Blue Brand:  Monteverde Country:  USA Availability:  30 ml bottles, international long cartridges. Pens Used:  Lamy (Reverse EF, EF, F, M, B), Kanwrite Desire with an Ahab nib. Description I would call this a “boring” royal blue. It hates copy paper, so if that is what you use most, go for R&K Königsblau instead. It’s only bearable with a B nib. On the plus side, it’s one of the easiest inks to clean. Despite my negative bias about the colour, I finished my entire sample using it for background washes. I wouldn’t mind a wall painted with this colour. Chroma Writing Samples (scans) Rhodia Iroful I've been introduced to Iroful paper, thanks @LizEF, so I might add it to the lineup. This paper can transform some inks drastically but it's extremely sensitive to hand oils. In this case, it didn't do much, despite what the s...

Private Reserve Vampire Red — Ink Review #141

Private Reserve Vampire Red   Ink Review #  141   Originally posted on FPN:  Aug 21, 2024   Ink:  Vampire Red Brand:   Private Reserve  Country:  USA Availability:  60 ml bottles and cartridges.  Pens Used:  Lamy (Reverse EF, EF, F, M, B, 1.1), Noodler’s Nib creaper. Description According to the Private Reserve website, it’s a “deep, intense brown with red tone.” To me, it’s the gorgeous colour of a 50-year-old rusted water pipe, with strong shading and a hint of gold sheen on Iroful paper. The sheen disappears over time. It is not a colour I would associate with vampires, unless they’re into ultra-processed oxidized blood. 🧛‍♂️🧛‍♀️ This ink is a snob. It thoroughly dislikes cheap paper and loves water to excess; it disintegrates with a drop of water. If you have Diamine’s Ancient Copper or J. Herbin Café des Îles, you probably won’t need this one. I was afraid the ink had stained the Lamy converter, but after a few flushes, ...

Rohrer & Klingner Iron Gall Nut Ink Ebony — Ink Review #140

Rohrer & Klingner Iron Gall Nut Ink Ebony   Ink Review #  140   Originally posted on FPN:  Aug 14, 2024   Ink:  Ebony (Iron Gall Nut Ink) Brand:  Rohrer & Klingner Country:  Germany Availability:  Limited Edition 2023; 50 ml bottles. Pens Used:  Lamy Safari (Reverse EF, EF, F, M, B, 1.1), Noodler's Nib Creaper semi-flex Description This is a limited-edition 2023 ink by R&K. It’s a purple-tinged iron gall ink, that depending on the light and the pen, can look brown, purple or grey.  As of the date of this review, it is still available at Jet Pens in North America, and Stilo et Stile in Europe. It’s one of those inks, that I wanted to keep using and using, and I was sad when I had to empty the pen. It has a lot of character. At first, I was surprised by the lack of lubrication. But as time went on, it became a very pleasant writer. So, give it a chance to settle in the pen. It’s a water-resistant ink, but it has to ...

Sailor Storia Mix Red — Ink Review #139

Sailor Storia Mix Red   Ink Review #  139   Originally posted on FPN:  Aug 7, 2024   Ink:  Storia Mix Red Brand:  Sailor Country:  Japan Type:  Pigment ink.  Availability:  20 ml bottles. Pens Used:  Lamy (Reverse EF /EF/F/M/B, BB), Noodler’s Nib Creaper. Description The sample was gifted by a generous FPGEEKs member.  The Storia series consists of eight pigment inks made by Sailor. Sailor has another Storia series, making this lineup quite confusing. While this ink looks like an eye-searing red nail polish in the vial, in reality, it's some sort of watermelon red. It has good lubrication. Shading is high, especially on Japanese paper. The ink is excellent on copy paper.  In washes, it’s watermelon pink-red. Chroma Writing Samples (scan) As the ink was well-lubricated and wet, I create a “Japanese” EF by reverse writing. J. Herbin Rouge Opéra — Ink Review #138

J Herbin Rouge Opéra   Ink Review #  138   Originally posted on FPN:  Aug 4, 2024   Ink:  Rouge Opera Brand:  J Herbin Country:  France Availability:  10 ml and 30 ml bottles, plus cartridges. Pens Used:  Pilot Kakuno EF, Lamy (EF/ F/ M /B, 1.1), Noodler’s Nib Creaper semi-flex Description The sample was gifted by a generous FPGeeks member. This is more of a burgundy than a red. I’m assuming the colour was inspired by the plush seats of the Paris Opera. It’s a wet ink, unsuitable for copy paper, with below-average lubrication. I would say that if you’re an opera lover, this might be the ink for you; if not, prends garde à toi! 🌹 ( Sorry, opera quotes will abound. The line is from the Habanera in Carmen and translates as “Beware!” ) Chroma Writing Samples Rhodia Midori Tomoe River 68 gsm Hammermill 20 lb Photo   Comparison Water Test Artwork Queen of the Night This little fountain pen sketch was inspired by my cat, who sometimes "si...
