J Herbin — Vert Empire   Ink Review #  103   Originally posted on FPN:  Dec 13, 2023   Ink:  Vert Empire Brand:  J Herbin Country:  France Availability:  cartridges, 10 ml, 30 ml bottles. Pens Used:  Pilot F3 EF, Kaweco Sport (EF/F/M/B/Stub 1.9), Conway Stewart 330 with an oblique flex nib Description I was intrigued by the beautiful green-grey colour of this Herbin ink, and I was not disappointed. For me, it's an artist’s ink, mysterious and complex, great for washes and very pleasant for writing. The ink is wet, with below-average lubrication and massive shading that loves water. Like most Herbin inks, it doesn’t like copy paper. Chroma Writing Samples The text is from Pierre Corneille's Le Cid, 1637 tragedy.   Noodler's —Empire Red   Ink Review #  102   Originally posted on FPN:  Dec 8, 2023   Ink:  Empire Red Type:  Bulletproof Brand:  Noodler's Country:  USA Availability:  90 ml / 3 oz bottles. Pens Used:  Pilot Kakuno EF, Lamy Safari (EF, F, M, B, 1.1), Nib Creaper semi-flex Description Another eternal/forgery-proof coral-red from Noodler’s, originally specific to the British market but now available in North America. It's pricier than the normal Noodler's lineup. The ink is touted as fluorescent, but I couldn't detect any fluorescence with my UV flashlight. It’s a wet, coral-red ink, lacking in the lubrication department. It’s pleasant enough to use, but I won’t be buying a bottle of it, in case you’re wondering. It has some shading as you can see with a broad nib. All the other shading you see, is exaggerated by the scanner. I used most of the ink on cheap envelopes and it really behaved well. Octopus Write and Draw — Penguin Brown   Ink Review #  101   Originally posted on FPN:  Nov 29, 2023   Ink:  Penguin Brown Brand:  Octopus WD Country:  Germany Availability:  50 ml bottle. Pens Used:  Pilot Kakuno EF, Stub, Kaweco Sport (EF/F/M/B/Stub 1.9), Osmiroid Copperplate Description This belongs to the Write and Draw line of nano-pigment inks. They are waterproof and lightfast. The complete lineup of the 38 inks is here: https://www.octopus-office.de/shop/en/creative-inks/write-draw-ink/?p=1 The naming of the inks is whimsical: the colour followed by an arbitrary animal, unless there are brown penguins and red koalas roaming about.  😀 The ink is well-behaved, wet, and well-lubricated, yet I am underwhelmed by the colour. I would recommend getting a sample before investing in a whole bottle. Note on Octopus Write & Draw inks:  These are pigmented fountain pen inks, so they are best used in well-sealed pens that are e...

J. Herbin — Bleu Nuit (Night Blue) — Ink Review #100

J Herbin — Bleu Nuit (Night blue)   Ink Review #  100   Originally posted on FPN:  Nov 25, 2023   Ink:  Bleu Nuit (Night blue) Brand:  J Herbin Country:  France Availability:  6-pack cartridges, 10 ml or 30 ml bottles. Pens Used:  Pilot 3A EF, Lamy Safari (EF, F, M, B, 1.1), Conway Stewart 330 Description It is an ink with below-average lubrication. It has some water-resistance, and it is easy to clean. The colour when wet is a blurple. It transforms into a washed-out denim colour when dry.  The colour doesn’t remind me of night, but dusk. The ink shades and does not like copy paper. It is one of my first bottles of ink and is over 10 years old, and while not my favorite, I’ve found a new life for it in my Kuretake brush pen to do artwork. It can also be mixed with Perle Noire, to convert into a delicious-looking blue-black. Writing Samples The text for Rhodia, Tomoe River 68 gsm, and Hammermill 20 lb is from a poem by  ...
