Noodler's Rachmaninoff   Ink Review #   116   Originally posted on FPN:  Feb 23, 2024   Ink:  Rachmaninoff Brand:  Noodler's Country:  USA Availability:  90 ml bottles. Pens Used:  Pilot Kakuno EF, Lamy Safari (EF, F, M, B, 1.1) Description I have been putting off this review for quite a while, as I love the composer and dislike the ink: a colour made for Barbie with the consistency of Pepto-Bismol. I’m assuming this atrocious colour was chosen because of the composer’s lovely lyrical melodies. If that’s the case, then it shows an absolute misunderstanding of the music. The Composer A bit about Rachmaninoff, one of the greatest composers and pianists of the early 20th century. He was born in the Russian Empire in 1873 and died in Beverly Hills, USA, in 1943. Rachmaninoff’s music was slightly out of sync with the musical trends of the era, and critics often panned his music for being too lyrical. This is from the 1954 edition of Grove’s D...

Pelikan Edelstein — Rose Quartz   Ink Review #  115   Originally posted on FPN:  Feb 14, 2024   Ink:  Rose Quartz Brand:  Pelikan Edelstein Country:  Germany Availability:  50 ml bottles. Pens Used:  Pilot Kakuno EF, Lamy Safari (EF, F, M, B, 1.1), Kanwrite with an Ahab nib. Description Ink of the Year 2023 Many thanks to @Lithium466for the sample. It’s a chameleon of an ink. It has a lot of character with EF to M nibs and is gorgeous with flex, where the halo effect is accentuated. However, with Japanese EF, B & Stub nibs, it was just a plain boring pink. It doesn’t like copy paper. Ink is wet with slightly below average lubrication. Chroma Writing Samples Quotes are at best attributed. As far as I know Mahler had only one wife. Kuretake – Shimbashi-Iro   Ink Review #  114   Originally posted on FPN:  Feb 7, 2024   Ink:  Shimbashi-Iro Brand:   Kuretake Series: Meiji No Iro Country:  Japan Availability:  20 ml bottles. Pens Used:  Pilon F3A, Lamy Safari (EF, F, M, B, 1.1), Noodler’s Nib creaper semi flex Description I love Kuretake brush pens, and I was very excited to try this one. Many thanks to @Lithium466 for the sample. These inks were released to celebrate Kuretake’s 120th anniversary. According to Kuretake’s website, these six inks are “inspired by colors popular around the Meiji era of Japan (1868–1912), when Kuretake was founded.” “Shimbashi” is the name of a place in Tokyo. The bright bluish-green colour was popular among geisha in Shimbashi, as it was fashionable and trendy. In short, the ink is wet, with average lubrication, long dry times on Japanese paper, and average dry times on Rhodia. The ink is pricey for what it is. While the scans capture the...

De Atramentis — Document Blue Grey (formerly Document Fog Grey)   Ink Review #  113   Originally posted on FPN:  Jan 31, 2024   Ink:  Document Blue Grey (formerly Document Fog Grey) Series: Document Type: Pigment ink Brand:  De Atramentis Country:  Germany Availability:  45 ml bottles. Pens Used:  Pilot Kakuno EF, Lamy Safari (EF, F, M, B, 1.1), Kanwrite with an Ahab nib Description According to Vanness this was formerly Document Fog Grey. Another Document ink by De Atramentis, with an uninspired name. The ink is wet, has below-average lubrication, and has very fast dry times on Rhodia,  so it's good for lefties with this paper. Ironically I most enjoyed writing/sketching with the Japanese EF nib. I would say it’s a better option than Akkerman #09 Laan van Nieuw Oost-Indigo. Cleaning was easy, but for longer use you might need a pen flush nearby.  Pigment Ink Note:  Pigmented fountain pen inks are best used in wel...
