Ink: Urkundentinte G10 schwarz 

Type: Iron gall
Brand: Gutenberg
Country: Germany
Availability: 30 ml bottles. Currently available from Soldan.de and listed by Gutenberg GmbH.
Pens Used: Unic wet noodle vintage flex, Conway Stewart 330, oblique flex, Pilot Metro F, Sheaffer Calligraphy M stub, Generic Chinese (EF, stub).

Description

This ink is made by Gutenberg GmbH (Läufer & Gutenberg). They make four other aniline inks.

Urkunden means certificate, and tinte, ink, so the name translates to Gutenberg Certificate ink. 

It is a waterproof brown-black iron gall ink. 

It reminds me of home-made iron gall inks. It is watery, lacks lubrication and will not work in all pens. My EF scribbles were illegible. However, I can always blame it on the pen. 😄

It’s not an easy ink to buy for people outside Europe. But not impossible. I recommend it only to die-hard iron gall aficionados, or those who like inks that remind them of leather, cigars or a wee drop of whisky. 😉

Buying was not straightforward. However, their service is topnotch. My first bottle had gone off. They replaced it immediately.

Cleaning Note: Like all IG inks, flush with water first. For stubborn residue, use a small pinch of pure ascorbic acid in water, then rinse thoroughly. Avoid ammonia-based cleaners with iron gall inks.

Note: Tomoe River used here is 68 gsm, not the thinner 52 gsm version commonly referenced in reviews.

This is an earlier writing sample. Note EF is not legible. The stub might have been affected by Salix. While I rinsed and cleaned the pen, the traces of ink seemed to have affected it. 

Hilroy

No ghosting on this paper, which is a feat.

Hammermill paper

High-resolution scan of a drop.

Sheen

Unless you pour a drop of ink on paper.

·      Bleed through: None.
·      Flow Rate: Alright.
·      Lubrication: Absent.
·      Nib Dry-out: Nope.
·      Start-up: No problem.
·      Saturation: Unsaturated.
·      Sheen: Unless you poor a drop of ink on paper.
·      Spread / Feathering / Woolly Line: None.
·      Nib Creep / “Crud”: None.
·      Staining (pen): Nope.
·      Clogging: Nope.
·      Cleaning: Easy. 
·      Water resistance: Waterproof.

I got my sample from Fountainfeder in Germany.  With a dry pen it’s a lovely, luminous red, with a wet pen it is a lovely red-black with gorgeous shading. It has no water resistance. It made my Osmiroid nib sing; however, with Lamy nibs the lubrication was slightly below-average to excellent, depending on the nib size.
