De Atramentis — Artist Cyan

Ink Review # 52

Ink: Artist Cyan

Series: Artist

Brand: De Atramentis

Country: Germany

Type: Pigment ink

Availability: 50 ml bottle.

Pens Used: Pilot Kakuno (EF/stub), Lamy Safari (EF, F, M, B), Kanwrite ultra-flex, Jinhao fude.

Description

This is another wet, permanent ink from De Atramentis. Its color is almost identical to that of the atrocious Document Cyan, but its behavior is a slight improvement. If you absolutely need to try Cyan, I recommend the Artist over the Document.

In all honesty, I did not enjoy this ink, it has not much character. However, it's pretty to look at in a transparent pen.

Note on pigment inks: Pigmented fountain pen inks are best used in well-sealed pens that are easy to dismantle. Regular cleaning is advisable, and pen flush may be needed if water alone is not enough.

Writing Samples

Rhodia

Rhodia was the second worst.

Midori

Midori was the best. I didn't bother to post the back. There's no bleed-through and ghosting is minimal to nonexistent.

Tomoe River 68 gsm

Note: Tomoe River used here is 68 gsm, not the thinner 52 gsm version commonly referenced in reviews.

This was the worst.

Water test

I didn't bother to post the water-test photo. Trust me it's waterproof.

The cat is done with Artist, the background with Document Cyan ink. Canson watercolor paper.

Ink Characteristics

·      What I liked: Fast dry time. Much better than the Document version, looks cobalt in a demonstrator.

·      What I did not like: Bleed-through, flat color. Limited paper choice: Of the three papers tested, only Midori survived.

·      Shading: None.

·      Ghosting: Faint on Midori.

·      Bleed through: Same as above.

·      Flow Rate: Excellent.

·      Lubrication: Excellent.

·      Nib Dry-out: None.

·      Start-up: None.

·      Saturation: Nicely saturated blue.

·      Shading Potential: None.

·      Sheen: None.

·      Spread / Feathering / Woolly Line: Yes.

·      Nib Creep / “Crud”: Yes.

·      Staining (pen): I don’t know. I won’t be using it for long, thankfully.

·      Clogging: No.

·      Cleaning: It’s a pigment ink, so the longer it stays the more difficult to clean. But with a well-sealed pen it should be alright.

·      Water resistance: Excellent.
