De Atramentis — Document Orange

Ink Review # 127

Originally posted on FPN: May 15, 2024

Ink: Document Orange

Brand: De Atramentis

Country: Germany

Availability: 45 ml bottles.

Pens Used: Pilot Kakuno EF, Lamy Safari (EF, F, M, B, 1.1), Brause dip pen nib.

Description

I reviewed its sibling ink a few weeks ago. This is a paler, more watery version that lacks lubrication.

When I first tested this ink a few years ago, it didn’t leave a good impression. My impression did not change. If you’re addicted to fountain pens and looking for a cure, this ink is it. My hand refuses to reach for the pen. I’m cured, hallelujah.

On the plus side, it’s good on copy paper and it does shade, but legibility becomes compromised.

If you absolutely need a waterproof orange, I would go for the Artist version—it’s cheaper and more lubricated—or try one of the numerous Octopus Write and Draw oranges. I would say this ink is only useful for art, ink washes and mixing.

Note that the images are harsh, so you might need sunglasses. 😎

Pigment Ink Note: Pigmented fountain pen inks are best used in well-sealed pens that are easy to dismantle. Some colours clean out easily, while others may need pen flush if water alone is not enough.

Writing Samples

It's impossible to scan and difficult to photograph. I added full-page comparison with De Atramentis Artist Orange, so you can make up your mind:

I didn't use a flex pen; I dipped a Brause rose nib instead.

These were photographed with the Northern light.

It didn't bleed through copy paper.

This was done 3 years, on HP 32 paper with my impressions:

Was done several years ago, so kitty is safe. 😺
