Kakimori — Soyo   Ink Review #  61   Originally posted on FPN:  May 12, 2023   Ink:  Soyo Type:  Pigment ink Brand:  Kakimori Country:  Japan Availability:  35 ml bottles. Pens Used:  Pilot Elite (EF/stub), Lamy Safari (EF, F, M, B), Kanwrite ultra-flex nib, Jinhao 450 fude nib. Description According to Kakimori, " Soyo is like a breath of fresh air. A colour that evokes the feeling of a pleasant breeze." This is my least favorite ink by Kakimori, mostly because of its paleness and lack of lubrication. You would need a cushiony nib to enjoy the writing experience. Otherwise, it's scratchy with finer nibs and dry times are quite long, especially with Japanese paper. On the plus side, the ink is well-behaved on copy paper. On the negative side it is mostly illegible.  I would say it can be used for journaling with wide or cushiony nibs, preferably on thick absorbent papers, or for fountain pen art.  Note on pigment inks: ...

De Atramentis — Document Dark Red   Ink Review #  60   Originally posted on FPN:  May 6, 2023   Ink:  Document Dark Red Series:  Document Brand:  De Atramentis Country:  Germany Type:  Pigment ink Availability:  45 ml bottles. Pens Used:  Pilot Elite (EF), Lamy Safari (EF, F, M, B) Description Delightful well-behaved ink. A pleasure to write or sketch with compared to the disastrous Document Cyan and Turquoise inks I reviewed recently. I honestly don’t see much difference between this and De Atramentis Artist Dark Red. They’re quite similar. Document is supposedly more “archival”. All Document and Artist inks can be mixed together.  They’re quite similar, though there are slight differences in color and behavior. Document Dark Red is supposedly more “archival.” You can judge the color difference for yourself: Document Dark Red is lighter on Midori .   I didn't test it with stub, flex or fude nibs, but you can get a ge...

Rohrer & Klingner — Document Brown (Dokumentus Braun)   Ink Review #  59   Originally posted on FPN:  May 4, 2023   Ink:  Document Brown (Dokumentus Braun) Series:  Dokumentus Brand:  Rohrer & Klingner Country:  Germany Availability:  50 ml bottles Pens Used:  Pilot Elite (EF/Stub) Lamy Safari (EF, F, M, B) Description This ink is one of the best, permanent inks I’ve ever used. It has very fast dry times, under 30 seconds with a B nib on all papers. It’s a joy to write or sketch with. It is the epitome of German efficiency: It works, it’s solid and it’s simple. There’s nothing “sexy” about this ink. It hasn’t got a complex chroma or an unusual name! A full written page with a B nib might have a hint of green or a lovely grey haze, depending on the light.    As a sketch ink, it looks almost black, especially on absorbent paper, as you can see in the artwork below. Note on pigment inks:  Pigmented fountain pen i...

Kakimori — Torori   Ink Review #  58   Originally posted on FPN:  Apr 19, 2023   Ink:  Torori Brand:  Kakimori Country:  Japan Availability:  35 ml bottles. Pens Used:  Pilot Elite (EF/stub,) Lamy Safari (EF, F, M, B), Jinhao 450 with an Ahab nib. Description Kakimori is a stationery shop in Tokyo Japan. They have a range of inks and stationery, which epitomizes Japanese minimalism and elegance. They also different dip-pen nibs and pen holders. They make personalized inks and notebooks.  Their pigment line comes in beautiful bottles.  According to them: "A perfect omelet reveals its deliciously soft center. Torori is the color of anticipation, describing a rich consistency overflowing with flavor." This is the least beautiful ink in the bottle. It is surprising that such an unflattering colour can transform into such a light and joyous orange. The ink is very wet, has below-average lubrication, and has long dry times.  As ...
