Noodler's — Blue Nose Bear   Ink Review # 4   Originally posted on FPN:  May 15, 2020   Ink:  Blue Nose Bear Type:  Forgery-resistant / water-resistant Brand:  Noodler's Country:  USA Availability:  3 oz, 90 ml bottles.  Pens Used:  Ahab semi-flex, Jinhao 450 (M, fude)   Description Despite the negative reviews, I bought a full bottle without trying a sample first. In retrospect, I probably wanted to love it. Noodler’s Blue Nose Bear is named after the famed Nova Scotian schooner Bluenose and the bear Winnipeg, who inspired Winnie-the-Pooh. As a lefty underwriter, the things that matter most to me are water resistance, acceptable dry times and smooth writing. Shading is a plus. Many reviews mention excessive feathering and bleed-through. My experience was more nuanced. A flexed Ahab on Rhodia was awful, yet I found the feathering oddly endearing on Clairefontaine. With a wet Jinhao M, the feathering was obvious, but I actually ...

Noodler's — Polar Brown   Ink Review # 3   Originally posted on FPN:  Apr 11, 2020   Ink:  Polar Brown Series:  Polar series Type:  Bulletproof Brand:  Noodler's Country:  USA Availability:  3 oz, 90 ml bottle.  Pens Used:  Jinhao 992, Jinhao 450 (M, Fude)   Description Polar Brown is one of my favorite inks. Ironically, I'm not a fan of the color. It’s somehow bland. It can be a frustrating and finicky ink, depending on the pen used. But in this day and age, where the veil on life’s non-permanence and uncertainty has been torn to bits, an ink, as permanent as the paper it bonds with, is a source of comfort.  When I first got into inks, being too lazy, I ordered a bunch of mystery samples. There were two Polar Browns. When I inked my pen, I told myself, what have I done to deserve such an ink in double amounts.  But it grew on me, to the point that I bought a bottle, and I always have a couple of pens inke...

Akkerman — Delfts Blauw — Ink Review #2

Akkerman — Delfts Blauw   Ink Review # 2   Originally posted on FPN:  Apr 8, 2020   Ink:  Delfts Blauw  Brand:  Akkerman Availability:  60 ml bottles Pens Used:  Jinhao 450 fude, Jinhao 992 F, TWSBI GO stub 1.1, Waterman W2 vintage flex Description This color is inspired by the lovely Delftware. At first, I was not so impressed by the ink. It was almost too pale to be legible. But with time I appreciated the soft soothing color, by using it with a fude nib.  The dry time is decent, the flow is wet and the lubrication ranges from below average to slightly below average. You can write non-ephemeral texts with it, without fear. It will survive a few drops, but not an accidental spill.  It didn’t agree with my dry Waterman W2 (though the only ink which agrees with this pen is R & K Verdigris)! But after a couple of days the ink settled in the pen, and it was alright. But the nib was still scratchy. Ironically, it made my TWSB...

Black Stone — Red Cashmere   Ink Review # 1   Originally posted on FPN:  Jan 18, 2020   Ink:  Red Cashmere - Mini Review Brand:  Black Stone Country:  Australia Availability:  Discontinued Pens Used:  Conway Stewart with OB flex nib and Jinhao 450 M   Description Hello. This is my first a mini review. To me personally the color, shading and writing sensation are important.  I can forgive many things, if the ink has that  je ne sais quoi  factor. In preparing this review, I appreciated even more the work of veteran reviewers whose reviews I've enjoyed over the years. Thank you.  From what I understand Red Cashmere, in its powdered form, was the genesis of Blackstone inks in Australia. My sample came from Fountainfeder and I was excited to try it.  I was taken aback by the color as it transformed from a full-throated luscious red into a dark, blackish-red.  But it grew on me as I played with it, especially as ...
