Noodler’s Eel Red Rattler’s Red — Ink Review #137

Noodler’s Eel Red Rattler’s Red   Ink Review #  137   Originally posted on FPN:  Jul 31, 2024   Ink:  Red Rattler’s Red. Series:  Eel. Brand:  Noodler's Country:  USA Availability:  90 ml bottles. Pens Used:  Pilot Kakuno EF, Lamy (EF/ F/M /B, 1.1), Unknown flex nib.  Description I’ve been looking for a good water-resistant red ink for some time, and I bought a bottle on impulse for its purported cleaning properties. While the section of my Kakuno was noticeably cleaner after two weeks, it didn’t remove a big blue stain. I should have left it in longer, but there were other inks waiting impatiently to be tested. Despite all that, this is a gorgeous red with decent water resistance and long dry times. It hates copy paper. I prefer it with EF–M nibs. As I use it mostly for drawing, it’s perfect for me, but it’s not for everyone. Chroma It's very complex and lovely to look at for ink nerds Writing Samples Rhodia Midori Tomoe River...

Graf von Faber-Castell Stone Grey (Cartridge) — Ink Review #136

Graf von Faber-Castell Stone Grey (cartridge)   Ink Review #  136   Originally posted on FPN:  Jul 24, 2024   Ink:  Stone Grey (cartridge) Brand:  Graf von Faber-Castell Country:  Germany Availability:  Cartridges, 75 ml bottles. Pens Used:  Kaweco (EF/F/M/B), Jinhao 450 fude nib, Osmiroid Copperplate nib.  Description This was a tough ink review. My initial experience with the cartridge was very unpleasant. I couldn’t make the ink flow in my Kaweco or Osmiroid (which doesn’t like dry inks), but it worked well in the Jinhao 450. I had to use two cartridges as one burst. So I checked several reviews and was surprised that they described it as a saturated, wet and well-lubricated grey ink. So, I took a third cartridge and syringed the ink into a Lamy Safari convertor to test it for an extra week or so. The experience was very different and pleasant. I used it mostly for sketching, as the written review had already  been done. How...

Pilot Red — Ink Review #135

Pilot Red   Ink Review #  135   Originally posted on FPN:  Jul 17, 2024   Ink:  Red Brand:  Pilot  Country:  Japan Availability:  30 ml bottles. Cartridges.  Pens Used:  Pilot Kakuno EF, Lamy (EF, F, M, B, 1.1), Noodler’s Nib Creaper semi-flex Description This was the fifth and last ink in the blind-testing series. I had already reviewed the fourth ink before the blind test (J. Herbin Vert de Gris). Many thanks to FPGeeks member Lithium. It’s not easy to find. But if you need an eye-searing red, it might be for you. This ink writes a vermilion colour, which changes depending on the paper, making it difficult to describe. It’s very bright, so prepare your sunglasses.  😎 It is very wet, almost too wet. Paradoxically, it has very fast dry times on Rhodia and is well-behaved on copy paper. It’s not a colour that I could write with, but I enjoyed doing some artwork with it. I doubt it’s a suitable ink for wet pens. It didn’t s...

Graf von Faber-Castell Lapis Lazuli — Ink Review #134

Graf von Faber-Castell Lapis lazuli   Ink Review #  134   Originally posted on FPN:  Jul 10, 2024   Ink:  Lapis lazuli Brand:  Graf von Faber-Castell Country:  Germany Availability:  Cartridges, 75 ml bottles. Pens Used:  Lamy (reverse EF/ EF / F/ M/ B, 1.1) Description This was the third ink in a five-ink blind test on the FPGeeks website.  Thanks to @Lithium466 for the sample. This is a dryish, faded royal blue, with almost no water resistance. It needs a wet pen and a wider nib. It’s very well-behaved on copy paper, but the colour is boring and does not capture the depth and beauty of Lapis Lazuli. I doubt any ink can. You’re better off buying a similar, less pretentious ink in cheaper packaging or buy the cartridge version. The best thing about this ink was using it for washes and cleaning it out of my fountain pens. After a few flushes, the pen was clean as a whistle. Chroma This is the loveliest thing about it. Jacques Herbin Violet Boréal — Ink Review #133

Jacques Herbin Violet Boréal   Ink Review #  133   Originally posted on FPN:  Jul 3, 2024   Ink:  Violet Boréal Brand:  Jacques Herbin Country:  France Availability:  50 ml bottle, 7-Pack Long Cartridges Pens Used:  Lamy (reverse EF, EF, F, M, B, 1.1), Kanwrite with an Ahab nib. Description This was the second ink in a five-ink blind test on FPGeeks website.  This is a lovely purple up to M nibs; with broader nibs, it becomes more anemic. It’s very wet, but behaves decently on copy paper. So, if you want a good purple that behaves well on copy paper, it might be the one for you. On the other hand, if you use wet pens, it might not be the one for you. While there’s some shading, I would not consider this a shading ink. The ink stayed in the pen for two and a half weeks. After an overnight soak, I had to use a cleaning solution to make sure that the purple residue was completely gone. Chroma Writing Samples I used the reverse side of ...

Taccia — Hiroshige Utagawa Ainezu   Ink Review #  132   Originally posted on FPN:  Jun 28, 2024   Ink:  Hiroshige Utagawa Ainezu Brand:  Taccia Country:  Japan Availability:  40 ml bottles. Pens Used:  Pilot Kakuno EF, Lamy Safari (EF, F, M, B, 1.1), Kanwrite with an Ahab nib Description This was the first ink in a five-ink blind test on the FPGeeks website.  It is one of the most intriguing blue-blacks I’ve ever tested, bordering on grey. The color is refined and elegant. However, it’s not for those people who love smooth, cushiony writing.  There’s a hint of turquoise in the chroma.
